Before your next purchase, please read the tips below to determine an authentic battery from a fake:
- Product safety certification: Two major independent product safety certification organizations, Underwriters Laboratories and the International Electrotechnical Commission, test a wide range of consumer electronic products including batteries and power sources. Before using a battery, check for either the UL or IEC verification to ensure product authenticity and quality. If the battery does not have either of these verifications, it is likely a fake and could potentially cause serious harm to the end user.
- Verify the serial number: In addition to a safety certification, most batteries have a serial number printed on it, further verifying its authenticity. Many brands offer services to inspect batteries for authenticity. For instance, some companies allow their customers to submit the battery’s serial number on the website; if the site cannot identify the serial number entered, the authenticity of the product is questionable.
- Check the packaging and battery: There are many similarities between an authentic battery and a fake, making the two products nearly indistinguishable. Examining the battery will allow you to view any alterations to the labeling or packaging. Be on the lookout for any warning signs of a counterfeit product including blurry images, substandard packaging, or misspelled words on the label.
- Location of product production: Researching where the product was manufactured can assist in determining if a battery is authentic. After several incidents of injury due to counterfeit batteries, some top companies have issued warning about purchasing inauthentic batteries from some Asian countries. As many of these counterfeits products tend to appear in the online marketplace, it is important to pay extra attention to seller feedback when the physical product is not available for examination.
