HOW TO SPOT FAKES: COUNTERFEIT NURSERY/BABY PRODUCTS

Counterfeit baby products have become a growing concern in the global economy, as well as in the household.  The dangers associated with buying counterfeit formula, cribs, or strollers are very real, and may put your family at risk.  In 2008, 300,000 babies in China fell ill and at least 6 died when some manufacturers added Melamine, a common chemical used to make concrete, to the formula to make it appear more nutritious.  The scandal caused panic among Chinese parents, and sparked a worldwide recall of Chinese-made dairy products.  Formulas are not the only baby products being counterfeited. Strollers, bedding, and cribs are just a few of the most commonly counterfeited products. Here are some ways to determine whether your product is genuine:

-Counterfeit baby carriers and strollers tend to have thinner fabric and padding than the authentic products.

-Check zippers and buckles for the company logo. Often times, counterfeit good’s logo placement will not match the real brand’s trademark.

-If the packaging differs from the authentic product, this can is a sure sign that you have purchased counterfeit goods.

-Counterfeit baby formula tends to differ in taste and consistency. Be sure to compare the liquid with other batches before feeding it to your child.

-Be sure to contact the company if you see their products on websites other than their own. If they do not authorize the website, chances are the products are fake.

As with any other branded consumer product, it is advised to follow these basic rules of thumb:

  • Only purchase from an authorized retailer

  • If the price looks too good to be true, it probably is

  • Spelling mistakes on any part of the product are a dead giveaway of a counterfeit
