The fake Apple stores in China that are still popping up despite last week’s uproar highlights just how serious a business counterfeiting has become.
It’s so rampant that companies, especially luxury brands, are stepping up their anti-counterfeiting efforts.
Canada goose, maker of upscale winter gear including parkas, has hired OpSec Security, a U.K. company to scour the Internet every day looking for rogue sites. In the first month, it managed to remove more than 20,000 counterfeit or infringing products.
OpSec also offers brand protection service to authenticate products, such as making holograms on tags or even inserting specific markers hidden inside garments. For Canada goose’s fall and winter collection, a new hologram will be sewn on the label.
