The world of payments is becoming divided between the “haves” and “have-nots”.  Most payment schemes around the world, with the exception of the United States, use what is commonly referred to as “chip and pin” credit card transactions.  Microprocessor chips are embedded in the card and used to process a transaction.  Those in the US with the good fortune to travel to different countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, China, or Brazil see the delineation between “haves” and “have-nots” every day. Card brands such as Visa, MasterCard, and their issuers, have adopted the use of chips in cards, which supplant the magnetic stripe.

Emerging Technologies in Transaction Card Security

OpSec Security exhibited at the Cartes Secure Connexions event from April 23-25 in Las Vegas, NV. This Cartes event is one of three held each year, along with Cartes Hong Kong in April, and Cartes Paris in November. Each show is unique, and represents the current trends in the transaction card industry. Cartes Hong Kong focused primarily on mobile payment technologies and the electronics embedded in new payment and access control cards. Some of these electronics include chips for both contact and contactless applications in banking and identity.

Can Mobile Phones and Transaction Cards Co-Exist?

OpSec Security participated in the Cartes Asia conference and exhibition in late March. Held annually in Hong Kong, this was our first appearance at the show under the OpSec banner after the acquisition last year of JDSU Holographics. One of the first things that you notice about this show is the weight given to the future of our payment system and how the use of mobile devices will provide opportunities to enhance the customer experience. While we may be used to our ability to make payments by cards in the developed world, there are still hundreds of millions of people who don't have access to the same kind of payment system we do.
